Cherry Trees in DC

The spectacular cherry trees planted around the Tidal Basin in Washington, D.C. have come to symbolize the natural beauty of our nation's capital city. The twisting and graceful trees are a gift from Japan in 1912. Every year,Washington celebrates spring with an explosion of  color that surrounds the Tidal Basin with pale pink and white blossoms. Thousands of residents and visitors from across the nation and around the world come here to witness the spectacle, hoping that the trees will be at the peak of bloom for the Cherry Blossom Festival. Every year the timing is different, and in 2013 the trees were at their peak bloom on April 9th.

Wallenda Sets New World Record

In just under 23 minutes, Nik Wallenda set another world record by crossing a nearly 1/4 mile wire stretched across the Grand Canyon. It was a nail biter to watch as the 2 inch wide, 1500 ft high wire swayed in the heavy gusts of wind.Wallenda was patient and had to stop walking twice to allow the wire to calm down.  This is another one for the record books. Congratulations Nik !

The summer solstice will also be followed with a spectacular full moon often referred to as a “SuperMoon”.
