April First In Corporate Housing May Be A Day For Fun

With the colorful history that Washington DC has it's no surprise that April Fools' Day pranks are many.  History has  documented all kinds of silliness between politicians, and notable names.  In 1925 more than 30 members of the Washington social elite received invitations to attend a dinner.  The host was to be Dr. Pavel Stransky secretary of the Czechoslovak legation. The location was the Washington Social Club.  The invitations were made by telephone from a woman with a French accent.  The big event arrived and the guests showed up to find the host was missing. In addition, the club was not prepared as they had received no request for reservation.   Oops!   Well,  the joke was on Dr. Stransky.  He never sent any invitations; he called no one; and the made no request to the club for dinner.  His comment to the press "Today is the 1st of April and I think it is all a joke.  But why should they pick on me?"  So, while living in DC corporate housing beware of phone invitations to fancy dinners.   Have fun in Washington!

Arlington Cemetery Must Be Seen When You Stay With Us In Military Housing

No trip to the DC area would be complete without a visit to Arlington National Cemetery.  This is the most significant military site in our nation and a visit here will change your life.  The cemetery is open every day and has a schedule of funerals that you should note before planning your visit.  Anywhere from 25 to 30 funerals are conducted every day here.  There are some rules you should learn before your visit and they are found on the website

Did you know?  Arlington National Cemetery is comprised of land that once belonged to George Washington Parke Custis, adopted grandson of George Washington. Custis spent his life commemorating Washington and built Arlington House on the 1,100-acre plantation as
a memorial to the first president. In 1857, Custis willed the property to his only surviving daughter Mary Anna Randolph Custis, who was married to Robert E. Lee. After the Lee family vacated the property at the onset of the Civil War in 1861, federal troops used the land as a camp and headquarters.  In 1863, the government established Freedman’s Village on the estate as a way to assist slaves transitioning to freedom. The village provided housing, education, employment training, and medical care.

When staying in military housing put this site at the top of your to-do list. Be sure to begin your tour at the welcome center.  Here you will find maps and other important information to make your visit memorable.  Bring strollers and wheelchairs if needed because the site does not have these available.

Fogo de Chao A Great Dining Venue When You Stay In Corporate Housing

Have dinner at Fogo de Chao when you stay in DC corporate housing.  Serving great steaks Brazilian style you pay $55.00 for all the meat, vegetables, salads, salmon and other seafood you can eat.  Dessert is extra and beverages are not included.  This may not be a frequent dining experience for everyone,  but it is definitely worth a visit.  For a special occasion this is a real treat. The customer service is superb, and the ambiance perfect.  Don't fill up on the bread, salad or soup because the  meats are outrageous. Served at your table you pick and choose your favorites.  Gaucho's come as frequent as you wish and everything is always hot and cooked to perfection.  Bon Apetite!

National Gallery A Real Treasure As You Live In DC Corporate Housing

When living in DC corporate housing take some time to see the National Gallery of Art. This will be one of the most memorable venues you visit and all ages will find wonderful things to enjoy.  The museum is recognized as one of the worlds greatest art museums with art from the 13th century to present day.  An exhibition of artifacts from the WWII project to protect art and which the movie The Monuments Men is based is on display till Sept. 1, 2014.  During the beginning stages of our surge into Europe during WWII some concerned people in the art community persuaded Pres. Franklin D. Roosevelt that preserving art, sculpture and historic monuments and protecting them from destruction was extremely important.  In the past, war had destroyed significant artifacts and historical sites all over the world.  Their desire was to not let this happen in Europe.  The intent was to acquire them, protect them, and return them after the war to the owners.  While in DC, you can visit the Gallery and see  many of these items.  The Gallery also hosts concerts, films and lectures so be sure to check the calendar and make sure you see all you desire.

Visit DC Chinatown While Staying In Corporate Housing

When staying in corporate housing this month it may be chilly but there are still many things to do.  Just be prepared for any type of weather and have an alternate plan in case the weather doesn't cooperate.  There are many different neighborhoods to visit with unique experiences  in each. Visit Chinatown and take in all of the food, shopping and color of the area.  Originally the home to many German immigrants it is also the home to the Goethe-Institut.  Beginning in about 1930 Chinese immigrants began to settle in the area.  Chinatown covers H and I streets between 5th and 8th streets northwest.  Take your camera and be sure to get some photos in front of the "Friendship Archway".  This was dedicated in 1986 and designed by Alfred H. Liu.  This is the largest type of single-span archway in the world.
