Plenty Of Snow Sports When Living In Corporate Housing In DC

Visit Snowshow Mountain Resort when staying with us in military or corporate housing.  If you love to snow-board and ski this is great place for you.  With areas for beginners and advanced athletes this will meet all of your needs.   There are snow makers to insure that the snow is abundant all winter and a super pipe will generate extreme enthusiasm.  This West Virginia venue is a favorite.  Another on the best of the best list is Wisp in Maryland.  This is a family friendly venue with mostly 'easy' slopes. This is a great place for a day trip with younger children. Off-slope family fun includes snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and riding the Mountain Coaster—whose cars zoom along 3,500 feet of downhill steel track snaking through the woods.  If snow tubing is what you are looking for then the 900-foot-long, 125-foot-high tubing hill at Massanutten in Harrisonburg, Virginia is for you. This run  thrills riders with three whoop-de-doo jumps, high-walled individual lanes, and one magic-carpet lift that makes your trip back quick and easy for multiple runs on a two hour lift ticket. Your stay with us can be full of snow and fun when you visit these venues.

Travel on The Train When Staying In DC Corporate or Military Housing

Here are some tips for getting around DC using the Metro. This convenient way to get around quickly can be confusing if you aren't used to traveling by train or bus.  You can get around DC, Virginia and Maryland and never hassle with cars, traffic and parking.  On my last trip there I loved to take the train to the city and get off at the station at the Smithsonian.  Using the Metrorail is safe and reliable. There are 86 stations in the area and you can get anywhere you need with this system.  Be sure to get a map and keep it with you.  Use the color coded routes and signs to keep you on the right track.  You don't have to pay at each station if you get a SmarTrip Card.  If you will be staying in military housing or corporate housing for an extended time this would be a great convenience.  Use this card for train or bus and re-load it again and again.  Never miss any of the events, attractions or excitement due to transportation issues.  See all of DC and the area while you are living in a Stay Attache residence.

Easy Recipe for Homemade Jelly

We hope your week in going fantastic, and you are looking forward to the holiday season. It's hard to believe how fast it has come upon us! This morning, we wanted to share with you a delightful recipe to make mouth watering homemade jelly. You can substitute any kind of juice that you like. You can also leave in the skins (if using fresh grapes), or pieces of fruit if you prefer to make jam. Once you get the hang of it, you’ll find it is very easy, and it just takes a little bit of your time. The rewards are so worth it, and they make great gifts. Here’s the recipe:

5 cups grape juice (approximately 5lbs. of fruit or 16 cups)
 7 cups sugar
1 packet of Fruit Pectin Liquid
 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice
 Yield: 7 (8 oz. jars)

Bring grapes to slow boil and press grapes with a mashed potato masher until juice comes out. Put mixture into a fine strainer and press all juice out. Put juice back in the pot; add sugar, pectin and lemon juice. Bring to boil for 1 minute- or until desired thickness is reached, skim off foam with a ladle. Ladle jelly into sterilized jars (boil jars/lids/jar rings) for 10 minutes or run through dishwasher cycle) using a wide mouth funnel, cover with lids and slightly hand tighten with jar rings. Put jars into pot with boiling water 2” above lids and boil as per standard canning procedures. Remove from water and let cool. Lids should pop as they cool to confirm they have all sealed. You can then unscrew the jar rings slightly and the lids will stay.

Historically Today Was a Busy Day!

If you love history and how it affects our life today, then today is a big day for you.

On this day in 1773 The Sons of Liberty dumped 342 chests of British tea into the Boston Harbor.  Dressed as Mohawk Indians they boarded the boats at midnight.  This was to protest the Tea Act of 1773 a bill enacted by the British parliament to save the faltering British East India Company by greatly lowering its tea tax and granting it a virtual monopoly on the American tea trade.
In 1950 in the wake of the massive Chinese intervention in the Korean War, President Harry S Truman declared a state of emergency.  He stated that “Communist imperialism threatened the world’s people.  And called upon the American people to help construct an “arsenal of freedom.”
In 1960, in the only event of its kind in U.S. history two planes collided over New York City. A  United DC-8 from Chicago was heading for Idlewild Airport(now JFK International). At the same time a TWA  Super Constellation from Dayton was heading to LaGuardia .  The United flight was put into a holding pattern due to bad weather.  The pilot miscalculated the pattern and flew into the path of the TWA flight.  The crash killed all crew and passengers on both planes as well as 6 people on the ground.
For those who love literature, on this day in 1775 Jane Austen was born.   In 1944 the Battle of the Bulge began.  Why that title?  Because the Germans created a “bulge” around the area of the Ardennes forest in pushing through the American defensive line.  This was a desperate attempt to push the Allied front line west from n northern France to northwestern Belgium.
For our younger readers…….In 1977  John Travolta was launched into super-stardom when he starred in Saturday Night Fever.
