The east coast is bracing for some rough weather this week. After a warmer than usual weekend, with lots of rain, the Christmas Day prediction is for cold. Tuesday night will see the mid 20's and some significant wind. Wednesday will still be cold but there is no prediction for snow. So, if you were hoping for a 'white Christmas' it probably won't happen.
In fact there's no snow in the forecast for the next 10 days. Partly cloudy, cold days may help keep you in the holiday spirit and at least you won't be fighting the snow. While staying this month in our corporate housing venues you will be able to enjoy all the wonders of our nations capital.

Easy Recipe for Homemade Jelly
We hope your week in going fantastic, and you are looking forward to
the holiday season. It's hard to believe how fast it has come upon us! This morning, we wanted to share with you a delightful recipe
to make mouth watering homemade jelly. You can substitute any kind of juice that you like. You can also leave in the skins (if using fresh grapes), or pieces of
fruit if you prefer to make jam. Once you get the hang of it, you’ll find it is
very easy, and it just takes a little bit of your time. The rewards are so
worth it, and they make great gifts. Here’s the recipe:
5
cups grape juice (approximately 5lbs. of fruit or 16 cups)
7 cups sugar
1 packet of Fruit Pectin Liquid
1/4 cup fresh lemon juice
Yield: 7 (8 oz. jars)
Bring
grapes to slow boil and press grapes with a mashed potato masher until juice
comes out. Put mixture into a fine strainer and press all juice out. Put juice
back in the pot; add sugar, pectin and lemon juice. Bring to boil for 1 minute-
or until desired thickness is reached, skim off foam with a ladle. Ladle jelly
into sterilized jars (boil jars/lids/jar rings) for 10 minutes or run through dishwasher
cycle) using a wide mouth funnel, cover with lids and slightly hand tighten with
jar rings. Put jars into pot with boiling water 2” above lids and boil as per
standard canning procedures. Remove from water and let cool. Lids should pop as
they cool to confirm they have all sealed. You can then unscrew the jar rings
slightly and the lids will stay.

Historically Today Was a Busy Day!
If you
love history and how it affects our life today, then today is a big day for
you.
On this
day in 1773 The Sons of Liberty dumped 342 chests of British tea into the
Boston Harbor. Dressed as Mohawk Indians
they boarded the boats at midnight. This
was to protest the Tea Act of 1773 a bill enacted by the British parliament to
save the faltering British East India Company by greatly lowering its tea tax
and granting it a virtual monopoly on the American tea trade.
In 1950
in the wake of the massive Chinese intervention in the Korean War, President
Harry S Truman declared a state of emergency.
He stated that “Communist imperialism threatened the world’s
people. And called upon the American
people to help construct an “arsenal of freedom.”
In 1960,
in the only event of its kind in U.S. history two planes collided over New York
City. A United DC-8 from Chicago was
heading for Idlewild Airport(now JFK International). At the same time a
TWA Super Constellation from Dayton was
heading to LaGuardia . The United flight
was put into a holding pattern due to bad weather. The pilot miscalculated the pattern and flew
into the path of the TWA flight. The
crash killed all crew and passengers on both planes as well as 6 people on the
ground.
For those
who love literature, on this day in 1775 Jane Austen was born. In 1944 the Battle of the Bulge began. Why that title? Because the Germans created a “bulge” around
the area of the Ardennes forest in pushing through the American defensive
line. This was a desperate attempt to
push the Allied front line west from n northern France to northwestern Belgium.
For our
younger readers…….In 1977 John Travolta
was launched into super-stardom when he starred in Saturday Night Fever.

Chemical Weapons Watchdog Receives Nobel Peace Prize
The
head of a watchdog group that is trying to rid the world of chemical weapons
has received the Nobel Peace Prize at a ceremony in the Norwegian capital. Ahmet
Uzumcu, director-general of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical
Weapons, collected the award Tuesday on behalf of the group.
Noting
the organization's role in leading the mission to destroy Syria's chemical
weapons, Nobel committee chairman Thorbjorn Jagland said the "anonymous
inspectors from the OPCW do an extremely important and difficult job." At the start of his speech Jagland paid
tribute to the late Nelson Mandela, who shared the Nobel Peace Prize with F.W.
de Klerk in 1993.

World Leaders Honor Mandela
Nelson Mandela was hailed as a
"hero of our time" as tributes poured in from world leaders on the
death of the man who led the triumphant fight against apartheid in South Africa
and became that country's first black president.
Barack Obama, the
first black U.S. president, said Mandela "achieved more than could be
expected of any man.” Today he's gone
home, and we've lost one of the most influential, courageous and profoundly
good human beings that any of us will share time with on this earth,"
Obama said at the White House.
South African
President Jacob Zuma, announcing that Mandela died at his Johannesburg home on
Thursday after a prolonged lung infection, said, "Our people have lost a
father.”
A memorial was
service was held as part of an extended state funeral culminating in Mandela's
burial on Sunday, 12-15-13 in the rural village of Qunu, where he spent his
early childhood. Before this, Mandela's
body will lie in state for three days beginning Wednesday in the amphitheater
of the Union Buildings in Pretoria where he was sworn in as president in 1994.

Is This a New Superbug?
The High
Line, a park that turned a dilapidated stretch of elevated railway on
Manhattan's West Side into one of New York's newest tourist attractions, may
have brought a different kind of visitor: a cockroach that can withstand harsh
winter cold and never seen before in the U.S.
Rutgers
University insect biologists Jessica Ware and Dominic Evangelista said the
species Periplaneta japonica is well documented in Asia but was never confirmed
in the United States until now. The scientists, whose findings were published
in the Journal of Economic Entomology, say it is too soon to predict the impact
but that there is probably little cause for concern.
"Because this species is very similar to cockroach
species that already exist in the urban environment," Evangelista said,
"they likely will compete with each other for space and for food." Guess if you travel to New York in the future
you better check all your bags for
unwelcome visitors………..Yikes!

Tips for Traveling to Cold Climates
Taking a trip to a winter wonderland? While traveling to a chilly destination can be just as fun and enjoyable as a warm weather trip, the truth is, it requires a little extra preparation (and a little extra patience for bad weather snafus!). Whether you’re planning a ski adventure in Colorado, a business trip in Beijing, or studying abroad in Paris, follow the advice of experienced travelers.
You’ve heard it a million times before and it’s true: When it’s cold, you need to dress in layers. Also, make sure to pay attention to your destination’s climate – down garments are great in dry climates, but not so much in wetter climates as they lose their insulating properties when wet and are slow to dry. Here’s more:
Avoid overexertion
Understand wind chill
Follow the safety rules on the slopes
Stay hydrated
Use eye and skin protection
Prepare for worst case scenario
Have a wonderful winter and Bon Voyage’!
